1490-1555. English Christian church reformer
and bishop. After his conversion to
Protestantism 1524 he was imprisoned several
times but was protected by Cardinal Wolsey
and Henry VIII. He was burned for heresy.
Latimer was appointed bishop of Worcester
1535, but resigned 1539. Under Edward VI his
sermons denouncing social injustice won him
great influence, but after the accession of
Mary he was arrested 1553 and two years later
burned at the stake in Oxford.
